Vehicle-to-grid goes commercial – when could fleet EVs become energy assets?

Vehicle-to-grid charging is moving beyond demonstrations and into genuine commercial use in the UK.

Versinetic’s latest review identifies the UK as one of a small number of markets where commercial V2G is now available, with Octopus Energy’s Power Pack providing a live consumer tariff.

Power Pack automatically charges an eligible EV when energy is cheaper and greener, then exports electricity from its battery when the grid needs it.

Octopus estimates a typical participating driver could save around £620 per year compared with its standard variable tariff, although vehicle and charger compatibility remains limited.

For fleets, the opportunity is potentially much larger where dozens or hundreds of vehicles sit parked for predictable periods.

The critical question is operational availability.

No fleet should compromise required vehicle range simply to participate in the energy market.

But vehicles with long overnight dwell times could eventually become storage assets as well as transport assets.
