Is SMR downtime becoming fleets’ biggest pain point? Latest solutions target faster, smarter servicing

A wave of new product launches and service rollouts suggests SMR downtime is emerging as a critical pressure point for fleet operators, with suppliers accelerating efforts to reduce delays and improve vehicle uptime.

The latest move comes from Renault UK, which has introduced a fleet of mobile servicing vans based on the Renault Master. Designed to carry out maintenance, diagnostics and minor repairs on-site, the initiative aims to eliminate the need for workshop visits and reduce vehicle off-road time. An initial seven vans are already in operation, with plans to expand to 25 units nationwide.

At the same time, Epyx has launched a new real-time connected vehicle data service, enabling fleets to monitor vehicle health, receive service alerts and automate maintenance workflows without the need for aftermarket hardware. The system can trigger service bookings automatically, helping to streamline SMR processes and reduce administrative delays.

These developments build on a broader trend identified in recent FleetWise reporting, including expanded mobile diagnostics from Repairify, mobile servicing initiatives from Mercedes-Benz Vans, and new automation tools designed to accelerate SMR authorisation. Alongside regulatory changes such as the SERMI rollout, which improves access to vehicle repair data, the direction of travel is clear.

For fleets, the shift reflects a growing need to minimise downtime in an increasingly complex operating environment. As vehicles become more connected and electrified, traditional service models are being challenged by the need for faster diagnostics, greater flexibility and more efficient repair pathways.
