Safety technology only works best if drivers trust it

Fleet safety technology can deliver significantly better results when drivers understand why it is being introduced and how their data will be used.

New Teletrac Navman research found 74% of well-prepared drivers rated their coaching technology highly effective, compared with just 19% among those who felt poorly prepared. One in five said technology had been installed with little or no management communication.

Privacy is a major part of the issue. Some 45% identified unclear data-use policies as their leading concern, while 47% said being able to see their own data would increase trust.

Fleet managers introducing cameras, telematics or coaching systems should therefore explain what is recorded, who can access it and how information will influence performance conversations.

Existing systems deserve the same review. If drivers were never properly onboarded, fleets may be missing part of the return on technology they already pay for.

A short refresher covering data use, positive recognition and driver access could improve buy-in without purchasing any new hardware.
