New planning rules could make fleet infrastructure easier to deliver

New planning policy in England gives freight and logistics dedicated recognition for the first time, potentially supporting future depot, charging and driver-facility investment.

The revised National Planning Policy Framework introduces a specific freight and logistics policy and calls for greater consideration of strategic transport links, EV charging, alternative fuels, and secure overnight HGV parking.

For fleet operators, the change matters because electrification can be delayed by more than vehicle availability or grid connections. Planning restrictions, unsuitable sites and a lack of space can also prevent infrastructure being delivered where it is needed.

Businesses planning depot expansion or charging installations should bring property, fleet, energy and operations teams together earlier and assess future requirements before sites become constrained.

The new framework does not guarantee approval for individual projects, but it strengthens the recognition of logistics infrastructure within the planning system.

For fleets expecting vehicle and energy requirements to change over the next five years, that makes long-term site planning increasingly important.
