Public Charging Price Watch: 55p charging now comes with rewards too

A row of InstaVolt chargers in a car park.

This week’s Price Watch shows how public charging value is increasingly moving beyond the headline tariff.

InstaVolt continues to offer 55p/kWh off-peak charging between 8pm and 7am through its app or RFID card, with no paid subscription required. Drivers now also earn rewards through its InstaVolt Miles programme when paying through the app.

MFG EV Power provides another strong benchmark at 59p/kWh for drivers using the MFG Connect app, compared with 79p/kWh when paying directly by card or contactless.

For a 60kWh charge, that works out at:

InstaVolt off-peak: £33.00
MFG app: £35.40
MFG standard payment: £47.40

The £14.40 difference between InstaVolt off-peak and MFG’s standard rate illustrates how payment method and timing can materially change fleet charging cost even before rewards are considered.

InstaVolt’s rewards are particularly interesting because charging credit can be earned without paying an additional membership fee.

For fleets, however, loyalty should remain secondary to operational fit. Drivers should not make lengthy diversions simply to earn points.

FleetWise’s previous Price Watch found similarly wide tariff differences; the trend is becoming clearer each week. Charging policy should increasingly consider tariff, time of day, payment method and rewards, rather than treating one network as having one price.
