Stellantis tests lighter, faster-charging EV battery

Stellantis has unveiled a prototype EV battery that integrates charging electronics and the inverter, cutting weight and improving efficiency. The Intelligent Battery Integrated System (IBIS), developed with Saft, has been fitted to a Peugeot E-3008 for real-world testing.

Initial results show a 10% energy efficiency gain and 15% more power output compared to a conventional system of the same size. Charging times are reduced by 15% - around an hour in some cases – while energy consumption falls by 10%. The redesign also cuts 40kg in weight and creates an extra 17 litres of cargo space.

By consolidating components into the battery itself, Stellantis says IBIS is easier to service and cheaper to manufacture, tackling two of the barriers to wider EV adoption: affordability and charging convenience. The group expects the technology could reach production models before the end of the decade.
