Dacia Spring unveiled - and it's secretly a Renault Twingo

Affordable EV superminis are popular with fleets looking to manage their costs effectively, and the new Dacia Spring seeks to tempt that market. 

The new Spring is based on the same platform and architecture as the Renault Twingo E-Tech. That's a big leap forward as the old Spring was an adapted Renault Kwid - a model originally introduced in 2015 designed for the Indian market.

The Dacia Spring is powered by an 80hp front electric motor teamed with a 27.5kWh battery pack providing up to 155-miles of claimed range (WLTP). 0-62mph? That'll be 12.1-seconds. Dacia says the average Spring owner travels around 13-miles a day, so the new car is firmly designed for local and city commuting.

Practicality is a strong point for its class, too. Boot space is up to 337-litres (seats up), which is teamed with a 18-litre front boot - the latter isn't found in the Twingo. 

As for the interior, it's a notable step up from the old car. It boasts a more modern design with an optional 10.1-inch infotainment system and some components shared with its Twingo sibling. 

UK pricing and specifications haven't been announced, the Dacia Spring still aims to be one of the most affordable EVs on sale. The brand aims for it to be sub-£18,000, thus undercutting its Twingo sibling. It'll be made in the same factory in Slovenia and could qualify for Band 1 of the UK Government's Electric Car Grant, which would reduce the price by £3,750. 

For fleets, the Dacia Spring - as well as the upcoming Twingo - aims to represent a cost-effective, urban EV designed to compete against the ever-increasing competition from China. Companies looking to minimise fleet costs on the next line-up of superminis should keep an eye on the Spring when pricing is confirmed.
