Mercedes has revealed the new GLA SUV, the latest model in the Stuttgart firm’s expanding line-up of new-generation electric vehicles.
The GLA follows on from the GLC EV and C-Class EV, and carries over the distinctive ‘iconic’ illuminated grille, which harks back to those of Mercedes’ heritage models.
Equipped with an 85kWh battery, both the GLA 250+ and 350 4Matic models offer a maximum claimed WLTP driving range of 408 miles.
A range of mild-hybrid variants will follow in GLA 180, GLA 200, and GLA 220 form, which will each use a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine mated to a small electric motor. The top-spec 220 will also feature all-wheel-drive.
Step inside the GLA, and it rather resembles a home cinema. It carries over the same dashboard-stretching MBUX 'Superscreen' seen in other Mercedes models. It even has the brand's Virtual Assistant that's powered by generative AI. This provides drivers with 'personalised answers' for available charging points and parking spaces. Clever stuff.
Pricing for the new GLA EV will start from just over £45,400 – £4,000 less than the current EQA SUV and avoids the UK’s £50,000+ Expensive Car Supplement (ECP) for EVs.
Fleets should note that the rivalling BMW iX1 and iX2 now qualify for the UK’s full £3,750 Electric Car Grant as some variants fall below the £37,000 threshold.
The RRP for the mild-hybrid is yet to be announced, but with the current GLA starting from £37,000, we expect it to hover around £40,000.
For fleets, the new GLA represents a continuation of Merc’s smallest SUV as a premium choice in a highly competitive segment, which consists of the BMW iX1, Audi Q4 E-Tron, and Volvo EX40.
