13% fewer miles shows the savings already sitting inside fleets

ArrowXL has cut delivery mileage by approximately 13% after changing the way it plans and manages routes.

The home-delivery operator now uses Descartes technology to plan 95% of its routes overnight, reducing dependence on manual planning. Early route terminations have also fallen from 5% to 1%.

For fleet managers, the important figure is the amount of unnecessary mileage that better planning can remove rather than the technology itself.

Fewer miles can reduce fuel or electricity consumption, maintenance, tyre wear and vehicle replacement pressure while allowing existing fleet capacity to work harder.

Managers should identify where routes are still built manually, where drivers regularly deviate from plans and where vehicles return early or require repeat journeys.

The opportunity is particularly valuable for fleets considering electrification. Reducing daily mileage can make more routes achievable within an EV’s usable range and reduce charging demand.

Before adding vehicles to solve a capacity problem, fleets should establish whether better use of the existing fleet could deliver part of the answer.
