Audi A6 Allroad returns to tempt SUV drivers back into an estate

Audi is reviving one of its most distinctive models with the launch of the new A6 Allroad, a rugged estate designed to offer SUV-like capability without sacrificing the comfort and driving dynamics of a traditional wagon.

The new A6 Allroad arrives at a time when rivals such as the Volvo V90 Cross Country and Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain have disappeared from UK showrooms, leaving Audi with a rare opportunity to target drivers who want practicality and all-weather capability without moving into a full-sized SUV.

For company car drivers covering high motorway mileages, the Allroad could prove particularly appealing. It sits 34mm higher than a standard A6 Avant, features quattro all-wheel drive as standard and gains adaptive air suspension that can be raised further for rough tracks, rural roads or poor weather conditions.

Audi is offering a choice of a 295hp V6 diesel or, for the first time, a plug-in hybrid. The latter combines petrol-electric power with up to 59 miles of electric-only driving, potentially making it an attractive option for drivers who regularly commute but still need long-distance flexibility.

Expected to cost from around £66,000 when it reaches the UK later this year, the A6 Allroad looks set to occupy an increasingly niche but potentially attractive space between traditional executive estates and premium SUVs.
