Fleet electrification increasingly delivering lower TCO

The shift to electric vehicles is starting to pay off financially for large commercial fleets, according to new research into total cost of ownership.

A survey of more than 300 senior fleet decision makers in the UK and US found that 43 percent expect lower total cost of ownership as a direct result of moving to electric vehicles. All respondents were responsible for fleets of 100 or more vehicles, covering cars, vans, trucks, buses and specialist assets.

The study, carried out by Vanson Bourne in partnership with EO Charging, also shows that fleets are now 53 percent electrified on average, despite the 2030 petrol and diesel phase out still five years away.

Cost is emerging as a key motivator. While 84 percent of organisations have introduced at least part of a net zero transport strategy, 54 percent say long term financial benefits are the main driver.

Richard Staveley said electrification has moved from being policy led to “a mainstream business strategy”, driven by proven cost efficiencies.

However, uncertainty remains. 81 percent of fleets say changing government policy is making long term planning harder, while 88 percent point to volatile energy prices as a challenge when building the business case for EVs.
