Government eases rules for on-street EV charging in boost for drivers without driveways

The UK Government is set to remove planning barriers for installing on-street EV chargers, making it easier for millions of households without driveways to switch to electric.

Under the changes, drivers will no longer need to apply for planning permission to install a charger when using a cross-pavement solution. The move targets the estimated 7 million UK residents who rely on on-street parking – one of the biggest obstacles to EV adoption.

For everyday drivers, this simplifies a process that has often been slow and restrictive. Installing a home charger has typically been straightforward for those with private driveways, but far more complex for those parking on the street.

The update forms part of a wider push to accelerate electrification, including reforms to energy pricing and infrastructure rollout. The government is also looking to reduce the impact of volatile gas prices on electricity costs, aiming to make running electric vehicles more affordable over time.

Taken together, the changes address a key gap in the EV transition – making it easier not just to buy an electric car, but to live with one day to day.
