The Electric Car Grant is knocking money off new EVs

If electrification is on the roadmap, the Electric Car Grant (ECG) is quietly improving the maths. The grant offers up to £3750 off eligible new electric cars, with the amount banded so that cheaper, cleaner-to-build models qualify for more. The latest model to join the list shows how it works in practice: the Jeep Compass Full-Electric now qualifies for the ECG, shaving £1500 off its price.

Because the discount is applied at the point of sale, it lowers the cash price, which in turn improves the whole-life cost figures that fleets rely on. The sensible habit is to check the eligibility list before ordering, since the bands shift as more cars are assessed and not every model lands in the top tier. Pairing the grant with the still-low company car tax on electric vehicles can make an EV markedly cheaper for both the business and the driver than the sticker price suggests. It is also worth asking the leasing partner to confirm the saving is being passed through, as that does not always happen automatically.
