Toyota electrifies the Urban Cruiser

The Toyota Urban Cruiser is making a return, this time as a compact electric SUV. Toyota has now revealed its interior, showcasing a 10.25-inch driver’s display, a 10.1-inch infotainment screen, boxy air vents, a large sunroof, and a sliding rear bench to optimise boot space or rear-seat legroom.

The model will be available in three trims: Icon, Design, and Excel. Standard equipment includes 18-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry, and a reversing camera. Design models add heated seats and a heated steering wheel, while the range-topping Excel benefits from a JBL sound system and panoramic sunroof.

Built on a new electric platform, the Urban Cruiser will offer 49kWh and 61kWh battery options, with 142bhp or 172bhp. Toyota has yet to confirm charging details, but expect 15-70% DC fast charging in around 30 minutes.

Its design closely follows the Toyota Urban SUV Concept, featuring LED headlights, bi-tone paint options and aero-deflecting alloy wheels. With a longer wheelbase than the Yaris Cross, it provides 306 litres of boot space and a flexible 40:20:40 rear seat configuration.

It's likely to be competing with the BYD Atto 2 and Vauxhall Mokka, so expect a sub-£30,000 list price.
