Volkswagen brings back Caravelle name as people carrier gets major upgrade

Volkswagen is reviving the Caravelle name for its large people carrier, replacing the Multivan badge and signalling a renewed focus on one of its best-known passenger vehicle brands.

Set to arrive in the UK in early 2027, the updated Caravelle receives a comprehensive overhaul covering styling, technology and interior flexibility. The move will be welcomed by many fleet operators familiar with the Caravelle's long-standing reputation as a premium people mover.

The biggest changes are inside. Volkswagen has introduced a new eight-seat configuration featuring two rear benches that can face each other, creating a more sociable cabin layout. Material quality has also been upgraded, while a larger 12.9-inch infotainment system, enhanced wireless charging and additional connectivity features aim to improve day-to-day usability.

Powertrain options remain familiar, with petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid variants continuing into the new generation. The eHybrid model gains a stationary air-conditioning function capable of running for up to eight hours, potentially useful for drivers waiting between appointments or transfers.

The return of the Caravelle name is arguably as significant as the vehicle updates themselves. While SUVs dominate family transport, there remains strong demand from shuttle operators, executive transport providers and larger families for vehicles that prioritise passenger space over fashion.

Volkswagen clearly believes the Caravelle badge still carries enough recognition to help it stand out in an increasingly crowded market.
