A new name tops the car registration charts for March

Chinese brand Jaecoo has topped the UK new car charts for the first time, with its Jaecoo 7 becoming the best-selling model in March.

More than 10,000 units were registered during the month, putting it ahead of familiar fleet staples like the Ford Puma, Nissan Qashqai and Kia Sportage. March is typically the busiest month for registrations due to the new number plate, making the result particularly notable.

The model’s performance also lifts it to second place year-to-date, just behind the Puma. For a brand that only entered the UK market in 2025, that is a rapid rise and a sign that newer manufacturers are starting to compete directly with established names.

Across the wider market, electric vehicle registrations hit a record 86,120 in March, although that still leaves EVs at 22.4% market share – short of the government’s 33% target under the ZEV mandate. Plug-in hybrids rose sharply, up 46.9% year on year, while petrol and diesel cars continued to decline.

Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders chief executive Mike Hawes warned that rising fuel costs linked to global instability could begin to influence demand, with early signs of increased interest in electric vehicles.
