BYD Dolphin G aims to bring plug-in hybrid tech to supermini budgets

BYD Dolphin G DM-i could become one of the most interesting affordable company cars of the year when it arrives in the UK later this summer.

Designed specifically for European roads and drivers, the new plug-in hybrid supermini will target familiar favourites like the Renault Clio, Toyota Yaris and Volkswagen Polo, but with something those cars cannot currently offer at this price point: proper plug-in hybrid capability.

Expected to start at around £23,000, the Dolphin G pairs a 1.5-litre petrol engine with BYD’s latest DM-i hybrid system and Blade battery technology. BYD claims a combined range of up to 621 miles, aiming to give drivers EV-style commuting during the week without the long-distance charging anxiety some still associate with full EVs.

For everyday company car users, that could make it an appealing middle ground. Small enough for city driving and parking, but with the flexibility for longer motorway journeys and home charging savings.

BYD is also expected to introduce rapid DC charging, something still rare in small plug-in hybrids, potentially allowing 10-80% top-ups in under 30 minutes.

Inside, expect a cleaner, more European-focused cabin design than earlier BYD models, with a large infotainment screen and a more conventional layout aimed squarely at mainstream hatchback buyers.

The Dolphin G is due to make its public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July, with first customer deliveries expected before the end of the summer.
