£2500 grant strengthens the case for compact electric vans

Volvo's new EX30 Cargo has secured eligibility for the Government's Zero Emission Van Grant, reducing its purchase price by £2500.

The fully electric car-derived van is available exclusively through Volvo's fleet sales channels and now starts from £33,529 on the road after the grant.

It offers up to 1,000 litres of load space and a payload of up to 390kg, placing it between a conventional company car and a larger light commercial vehicle.

For fleets, that creates an interesting downsizing opportunity.

Many service, technical and support roles use vans because employees need secure load space, even when the equipment being carried does not justify a full-size vehicle.

Where range, payload and volume requirements allow, a smaller electric commercial vehicle can reduce energy consumption, make parking easier and potentially lower acquisition and running costs.

The EX30 Cargo also highlights a wider fleet-management question: should every van replacement automatically be another van of the same size?

Electrification gives operators a useful opportunity to reconsider whether each vehicle is correctly matched to the job.
