Google Maps and Waze add live UK fuel prices to help fleets cut forecourt costs

An illustration of the driver's side of a car interior, with a smartphone screen showing sat-navGoogle has launched live petrol and diesel pricing across Google Maps and Waze in the UK, giving drivers a quicker way to compare nearby forecourts before they stop.

The new feature uses the Government’s Fuel Finder data alongside Waze community information, allowing users to search for petrol or fuel and see current prices directly on the map. Different fuel grades available at individual stations can also be compared.

For fleet managers, the benefit is straightforward.

Drivers who still operate petrol, diesel or hybrid vehicles can make more informed refuelling decisions without relying on a separate fuel-price app or automatically stopping at the nearest site.

That matters particularly for higher-mileage fleets, where relatively small pence-per-litre differences can add up quickly across multiple vehicles.

The development could also help fleets reinforce fuel policy by encouraging drivers to compare nearby prices before refuelling, especially away from motorway service areas where fuel is typically more expensive.

As mixed-energy fleets become more common, the same principle increasingly applies across both fuel and charging: route planning should take account of energy cost, not simply convenience.
