BYD ultra-fast Flash charging UK rollout is imminent – which models are compatible?

BYD plans to roll out 300 of its new 1,500kW Flash chargers across the UK by the end of 2027, promising charging speeds that could make today's rapid chargers look slow.

The Chinese manufacturer says the network will focus on motorways and high-traffic locations, with ambitions to create a Flash charging site roughly every 31 miles across Europe.

While the chargers will work with any EV using a standard CCS charging connector, only a small number of upcoming BYD and Denza models will be capable of accessing the full 1,500kW charging speed.

The first UK model designed for Flash charging will be the Denza Z9 GT, due to arrive this September. Future Denza models including the D9 MPV and B5 SUV will also be compatible thanks to BYD's latest Blade battery technology.

For everyone else, the chargers will still work, but charging speeds will be limited by the vehicle's own hardware.

BYD claims the Z9 GT can charge from 10% to 70% in just five minutes, with a near-full charge taking around nine minutes.

The other potentially significant development is cost. BYD says it is targeting charging prices below 50p/kWh, potentially undercutting many existing rapid charging networks.

For company car drivers, the immediate impact may be limited. But if Flash charging technology eventually reaches mainstream BYD models, it could become one of the biggest developments in EV convenience since the arrival of rapid charging itself.
