Next Vauxhall Astra heading for radical rethink as SUVs take over

Vauxhall's longest-running nameplate is set for a dramatic overhaul, with the next-generation Astra confirmed to arrive by 2030 in a shape that breaks from the “traditional” mould.

Speaking after Stellantis Investor Day, Vauxhall-Opel boss Florian Huettl signalled that the Astra badge "doesn't mean necessarily that it's a traditional hatchback," hinting at a more crossover-like body to chase Europe's booming demand for mid-sized SUVs.

Despite the changes, Huettl confirmed that Vauxhall-Opel will continue to offer an estate, or ‘Sports Tourer’ body option, given the sustained demand in Opel's home German market.

The car forms part of a four-model push by 2030, alongside a new Corsa and a Leapmotor-developed C-SUV, backed by more than €1 billion of investment in Germany.

The next-generation Opel Astra will sit on parent company Stellantis’s new STLA ONE platform and will be manufactured at Opel's flagship plant in Rüsselsheim.

That architecture brings 800-volt charging and structural LFP batteries, so range should climb well beyond the current car's roughly 280 miles.

Huettl confirmed it will "certainly be a BEV," though hybrid options remain under consideration as the market shifts.
