Skywell importer exits UK as competition intensifies for new EV brands

Innovation Automotive, the UK importer for Chinese brands Skywell and DFSK, has ceased trading, highlighting the increasingly competitive challenge facing new manufacturers entering the British market.

The company represented Skywell for five years but said the level of investment now required in dealer networks, aftersales support and marketing had become unsustainable. Skywell is now searching for a new UK distribution partner.

Sales of the Skywell BE11 have remained limited, with just 31 cars registered during 2025 and 26 in the first half of 2026, despite an updated model arriving earlier this year.

For company car drivers and fleets, the news is a reminder that vehicle choice extends beyond range, technology and monthly cost. Long-term aftersales support, warranty backing and dealer coverage remain important considerations, particularly as a growing number of new Chinese brands enter the UK market.

Skywell says it expects parts stock and warranty administration to transfer to a new operator, helping support existing owners. However, the future is less certain for DFSK, where no replacement warranty provider has yet been confirmed.

The closure underlines how competitive the UK's rapidly expanding EV market has become, with strong products alone no longer enough to guarantee long-term success.
