Electric rigid trucks are becoming a practical regional fleet option

The growing IVECO S-eWay range shows how battery-electric trucks are expanding beyond tractor units into regional and urban rigid applications.

The S-eWay Rigid can be configured from 20 to 28 tonnes GVW, with four, five or seven battery packs and up to 400km of quoted range. DC charging is available at up to 350kW, with IVECO quoting around 200km of added range in 45 minutes.

For fleet managers, rigid trucks could provide a relatively practical starting point for heavy-duty electrification.

Urban and regional work is often more predictable than long-haul operations, with vehicles returning to base and covering repeatable routes.

IVECO also offers different battery configurations and electric PTO options, allowing operators to match energy capacity to applications including refrigerated work, refuse, construction and distribution.

That matters because carrying unnecessary battery capacity adds cost and weight.

Fleet managers assessing electric rigids should therefore start with duty cycle, payload and auxiliary power demand rather than automatically choosing the largest available battery.

The strongest electric-truck business case will come from specifying only the capability the route actually requires.
