Tesla Semi European arrival gives HGV fleets another electrification option

Tesla will reveal European specifications and launch details for the Semi at IAA Transportation, bringing another serious battery-electric option into the heavy-truck market.

The US version offers up to 500 miles of range and supports charging at up to 1.2MW, with Tesla claiming much of that range can be replenished in around 30 minutes. European specifications could differ to meet local dimensions, weights and operating requirements.

For fleet operators, those European numbers will matter more than the badge.

Managers should watch usable payload, loaded range, charging time and infrastructure requirements, particularly as megawatt charging begins competing with alternatives such as battery swapping for high-utilisation operations.

The arrival of another large manufacturer should also increase competition in an electric-HGV market where viable choice remains relatively limited.

The immediate action is not to change replacement plans, but to include the Semi in future comparisons once European specifications and availability are confirmed.

For long-haul fleets, 2026 is increasingly becoming the year to reassess what electric trucks can realistically do.
