Are your van and truck drivers demoralised? Geotab research suggests they may be

Almost half of van and truck drivers (46%) in the UK have considered leaving their jobs in the past year, many highlighting extreme stress, dangerous roads and a perceived lack of employer support as the reasons.
According to a recent survey by Geotab of over 3500 commercial vehicle drivers across Europe, 97% believe the risk of accidents has risen in the last five years, with most attributing it to poor driving by others, speeding and mobile phone use.
The pandemic has worsened this perception, with 95% saying roads have become more hazardous since 2020.

Stress plays a key role – 91% of drivers say it negatively affects their driving, and 70% link it to greater road dangers. In the UK, 46% admit breaking speed limits to meet deadlines, while 61% say roadworks and traffic are key barriers to timely deliveries.

Despite this, many drivers feel unsupported. Over half are uncomfortable seeking help for stress, with 35% of UK drivers saying their employer offers little or no support. Meanwhile, 67% support using technology to improve driving performance.

Geotab’s Edward Kulperger warns that ongoing pressure without support risks pushing drivers out of the industry. He calls for employers to use data and technology not only to boost efficiency, but also to create safer, less stressful environments.
