The Department for Transport (DfT) has tightened the rules for its £650 million electric car grant.

Initially, higher trim levels of models priced under £37,000 could still qualify even if they exceeded the limit. From August 29, however, only cars costing up to £42,000 will remain eligible. Any vehicle above that figure will no longer receive support.

The DfT says the cap ensures help is directed at affordable EVs. Ford became the first manufacturer to secure the full £3750 grant, while four Peugeot and DS models gained £1500 support. In total, 28 cars now qualify under the scheme.
