Record electric-van month gives fleets more confidence to move suitable routes

September delivered the strongest month yet for battery-electric van registrations.

The SMMT recorded 4832 new electric vans, up 13.4% year on year, as the overall LCV market grew 4.8%.

Electric vans are still running below the level required by the ZEV mandate, but the record volume is a positive signal for fleets.

Greater market scale generally means broader vehicle choice, more supplier experience and a larger pool of real-world operating data.

Fleet managers should use that momentum to revisit routes previously considered marginal for electrification.

The strongest candidates remain vehicles with predictable mileage, reliable overnight parking, manageable payloads and access to low-cost charging.

The objective should not be to electrify every van at once.

Instead, fleets can identify the proportion that works today, deploy those vehicles first and use real operating data to guide the next phase.

Record registrations show the eLCV market is developing. The fleet opportunity is turning that improved availability into practical deployments where the business case already works.
