Red introduces electric van driver-training module

RED Corporate Driver Training has introduced a new module to help drivers adapt to electric vans. The course responds to recent UK Government changes that allow holders of a category B licence to drive electric vans up to 4.25 tonnes without needing five hours of additional training.

The training covers the effects of increased vehicle weight on handling and braking, and provides an introduction to advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). It takes place at RED’s Donington Park centre, and at various off-road locations across the UK.

Greg Ford, RED’s head of corporate, highlighted the differences between electric and diesel vans, warning that regenerative braking and quicker acceleration can surprise untrained drivers. He also stressed the importance of heightened hazard awareness due to the quietness of electric vans, particularly around pedestrians.

To complement the practical sessions, RED also offers an online module through its SafetyFirst risk management platform to support wider driver education.
