Large-electric-van specialist, Bedeo, has issued a stark warning to the Government, urging immediate action to avoid the large van sector falling behind the UK’s zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) and net-zero targets.
In an open letter to ministers, the UK-based large van electrification and retrofit specialist, pointed out that electric vans in the 3.5 to 4.25-tonne category currently represent just 0.5% of the market.
Bedeo argues that range limitations, payload reductions and high costs are hindering widespread adoption.
CEO Osman Boyner stated: “Fleet managers tell us they’re ready to convert 60-70% of diesel vans – but not until cost and performance improve. Today, they’re ready for range extender and retrofit – but they need Government support.”
Bedeo’s Reborn Electric system, including the RE-100 Range Extender, allows over 100km of zero-emission driving without compromising the vehicle’s diesel performance. However, payload restrictions remain a legislative obstacle to broader uptake.
Bedeo is calling for three key policy changes:
• Inclusion of range extenders in government grant schemes
• Adjustments to the B licence 4.25-tonne weight limit to include hybrid vehicles
• Formal recognition of retrofit technologies in decarbonisation policies.
The company has received a letter of intent for 500 retrofitted vans, signalling growing demand. Bedeo has also contacted senior ministers, seeking clarity on why range extenders are approved for London taxis but not goods vehicles, despite operating on the same principle. It warns that without immediate intervention, the industry risks missing crucial climate goals.
