DfT considers EU proposals for EV and ADAS MOT tests

The Department for Transport (DfT) has confirmed it will consider new European Union proposals to modernise MOT-style tests for electric vehicles (EVs) and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), in line with technological progress.

While the UK sets its own MOT rules, the DfT said it 'continually reviews the MOT system, to ensure road safety and environmental standards are maintained', and will evaluate any relevant EU developments.

The European Commission argues current vehicle inspection rules are outdated and do not adequately assess modern systems such as ADAS or EV components. “By modernising our roadworthiness rules we are harnessing the latest technology, strengthening enforcement, and ensuring they keep pace with the evolving realities of mobility,” said Apostolos Tzitzikostas, commissioner for sustainable transport and tourism.

The UK Government recently confirmed no changes to the existing MOT schedule, maintaining the first test at three years from registration, with annual checks thereafter, despite earlier consultations suggesting a four-year start might reduce costs for drivers.
