Public Charging Price Watch: subscriptions start to challenge PAYG

Public charging is moving beyond simple pence-per-kWh pricing, with subscription passes and rewards schemes giving fleets more ways to manage cost.

Be.EV has launched two fixed monthly charging passes. Its Go Pass costs £49 for 120kWh (40.8p/kWh), while Go Further costs £89 for 250kWh (35.6p/kWh). Drivers who use their full allowance then move onto 49p/kWh charging for the rest of the billing period.

Its Flexi Pass now costs £13.99 per month and unlocks charging at 39p/kWh at any time.

For fleets with predictable public-charging demand, subscription pricing could make costs easier to forecast. The risk is under-utilisation: unused kWh quickly weaken the business case.

Charging rewards are also becoming part of the calculation. Source has introduced a scheme offering two points per kWh, redeemable against retail and food vouchers.

Fleet managers should now compare subscription fees, utilisation, off-peak rates, roaming costs and rewards, not simply the headline tariff.

The immediate action is to identify regular public-charging users and test whether a fixed allowance could beat current reimbursement or roaming costs.
