Mazda Service Plan expanded to include out-of-warranty cars

Mazda has launched a new service plan designed to bring more out-of-warranty vehicles into its franchised dealer network, including cars not originally bought from a Mazda retailer.

The Mazda Service Plan is available through Mazda dealers when customers buy new or Mazda Selected approved used cars. For the first time, though, existing owners can also purchase plans directly through Mazda’s UK website.

The current basic warranty term on Mazda vehicles is six-years or 100,000-miles, depending on which comes first. Battery covers is up to eight-years/100,000-miles for hybrids and EVs.

Though aimed for loyalty from private buyers, the Mazda Service Plan is available for any customer that owns or operates an eligible vehicle in the UK, which includes business and company car drivers. For fleets, the vehicle(s) must be registered from 2015 onwards to qualify for a pre-paid plan.

Early uptake of the Service Plan suggests demand from owners of older vehicles, with around 10% of new plans sold so far covering cars more than 10 years old. Mazda said this includes owners of 13-year-old MX-5 and CX-5 models choosing to return to its dealer network for servicing.

Mazda says the initiative is intended to give owners access to Mazda-trained technicians while offering competitive labour rates. Customers can also make voluntary additional monthly contributions towards unexpected replacement costs not covered by their plan, with unused contributions refundable when the plan ends.

For fleets, this represents a rather significant appeal for used vehicles. Mazda cars that have exceeded the six-year or 100,000-mile barrier no longer have to be excluded from the manufacturer's servicing plans, which can help with brand's trust and the general efficiency of fleet running operations.
