Haulage firm, Wincanton, is adding 24 electric HGVs to its fleet this summer as part of its commitment to cutting emissions from heavy logistics. Supplied by DAF, Volvo and Renault, the vehicles will operate at over 40 tonnes and are expected to lower CO2 emissions by around 2400 tonnes each year.
The move supports two Government-backed trials –Electric Freightway and eFREIGHT 2030 – under the Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) scheme.
Wincanton will use the vehicles across various sectors, gathering performance data to guide future fleet strategies. Charging infrastructure is being installed at depots in Greenford, Portbury, Northamptonshire and near Glasgow, in partnership with Voltempo and Gridserve.
While electric logistics adoption is still in its early stages, the company sees real potential.
