Home and workplace EV charger grants rise to £500

Government support for EV charge point installations will increase from £350 to up to £500 from April 1, covering almost half the cost of a typical installation until March 2027.

The Department for Transport has streamlined its support schemes, reducing eight grants to five. These include the charge point grant for renters and flat owners, residential landlords, households with on street parking, and the Workplace Charging Scheme. The schools grant, formally the Workplace Charging Scheme for State Funded Education Institutions, will continue for another year with funding of up to £2,000.

Aviation, maritime and decarbonisation minister, Keir Mather, said: “We’re taking action to make EV ownership the affordable choice for everyone – not just those with driveways.”

DfT data shows 65,318 sockets have been installed through the Workplace Charging Scheme since 2016, including more than 7,000 last year.

Tom Middleditch, sustainability spokesperson at Europcar, said: “Making the investment into charging at a business location could help with the total cost of ownership.”
