BMW gives X5 lovers more choice than ever with first all-electric version

BMW has unveiled an all-new X5, and for the first time buyers will be able to choose the luxury SUV as a diesel, plug-in hybrid or fully electric model.

The biggest news is the arrival of the iX5, which promises up to 525 miles of official range from a huge 141kWh battery. That puts it among the longest-range electric SUVs on sale, making it a realistic option for drivers covering long motorway journeys without frequent charging stops. When you do need to recharge, it supports ultra-rapid charging of up to 460kW.

Drivers who regularly tow or aren't ready to switch fully electric still have plenty of choice. The familiar six-cylinder diesel returns with up to 40mpg and a 3,000kg towing capacity, while the plug-in hybrid combines a petrol engine with around 60 miles of electric-only driving, enough to cover many daily commutes without using any fuel.

Inside, BMW has given the X5 a complete makeover with a cleaner, more digital cabin centred around a panoramic driver display and a large central touchscreen running the brand's latest infotainment system.

The new X5 shows where premium SUVs are heading. Rather than asking buyers to change models to suit different needs, BMW is offering the same luxury SUV with a powertrain to match almost every type of driver, whether that's long-distance motorway mileage, regular towing or making the switch to fully electric.
