Infrastructure specialist cuts fuel costs by £45,000 through data-led fleet management

Rail and infrastructure specialist Story Contracting has reduced annual fuel costs by around £45,000 after using data from FleetWise Trusted Brand Shell Fleet Solutions to identify unnecessary spend across its 650-vehicle fleet.

Working with Shell Fleet Solutions, Story analysed fuel purchasing patterns through Shell Fleet Insights, a reporting platform designed to help fleets improve cost control, compliance and driver behaviour.

The biggest gains came from tackling motorway fuel purchases and eliminating unnecessary premium fuel usage. Story reports savings of approximately £20,000 per year by reducing motorway service station transactions, alongside a further £25,000 annual saving by stopping high-grade fuel purchases where it was not required.

The business has also increased the proportion of fuel transactions made through Shell and partner networks to 69%, helping it secure more favourable pricing while improving visibility over spending patterns.

Beyond fuel savings, Story says improved data visibility has helped reduce inappropriate transactions and strengthen compliance oversight across its fleet of 300 cars and 350 vans.

Commercial Fleet Manager Carl Bevan said the insights have helped improve fuel spend, driver behaviour, safety and compliance performance.
