Used market watch: EV demand strengthens as hybrids fight back

The used alternative fuel market is sending mixed but encouraging signals for fleet operators, with electric cars proving the fastest-selling vehicles in the retail market while older hybrid models continue to dominate dealer demand.

Autotrader's latest data shows used EVs aged between three and five years are now the fastest-selling fuel type, highlighting growing consumer confidence in second-hand electric vehicles. At the same time, Dealer Auction reports trade buyers are favouring proven hybrid models from established brands as stock profiles become older and higher mileage.

Fastest-selling used models (June 2026)

  • 1. MG ZS Hybrid (1-3 years) – sells in 10 days
  • 2. Kia Niro EV (3-5 years) – 12 days
  • 3. MG4 EV (3-5 years) – 13 days
  • 4. Polestar 2 (3-5 years) – 16 days
  • 5. Volkswagen ID.4 (3-5 years) – 19 days

Six of the 10 fastest-selling used cars are electric, with 3-5-year-old EVs taking an average of just 21 days to sell, compared with 30 days for the wider used car market. Used EV prices have also stabilised year-on-year for the first time since 2022, providing a welcome boost for residual value confidence.

Meanwhile, Dealer Auction found hybrids accounted for 90% of its top-performing alternative fuel vehicles during May. Volvo, Toyota and Lexus led the rankings for retail margin and sales performance, suggesting dealers are prioritising trusted, established hybrid models as buyers become more value-conscious.

For fleets planning replacement cycles or defleeting vehicles, the latest data points to a healthy used market with strong demand for well-priced EVs alongside continued appetite for proven hybrid models.
