RAC research reinforces money-saving impact of telematics

Fresh research from the RAC this week has reinforced one of the key messages from FleetWise's latest Better Fleet playbook: telematics only creates value when the data is turned into action.

According to the RAC, fleets can reduce fuel costs by up to 15% by using telematics data to identify inefficient driving behaviours such as excessive idling, harsh acceleration, heavy braking and poor route planning. The company says it has already applied this approach across its own breakdown patrol fleet, delivering measurable improvements in fuel consumption, safety and vehicle utilisation.

The findings closely mirror the advice published in this week's Better Fleet: A practical playbook for turning telematics data into fleet savings, which argues that the biggest opportunity often isn't replacing vehicles but changing how they're driven.

The playbook highlights real-world examples of fleets already achieving significant savings through driver coaching and telematics. Currys, for example, reduced annual fuel costs by more than £416,000 while cutting fuel consumption by 10.8% using Lightfoot's real-time driver coaching technology. Meanwhile, Tarmac combined telematics with driver coaching to achieve 30% fewer collisions, 30% lower repair costs and a 25% improvement in van fuel economy.

The RAC says many fleets are now moving beyond simply tracking vehicles towards using telematics to coach drivers, reduce maintenance costs and improve operational efficiency.
