Solar car parks could cut fleet energy costs by £18,000 a year

Installing solar-powered energy hubs in fleet car parks could deliver substantial savings while easing pressure on the electricity grid, according to new research from Cenex.

The study assessed the performance of 3ti's Papilio3 V2X DC FastHub across a range of commercial and public sector sites, including fleet depots, offices, factories and leisure destinations.

For fleets, the findings highlight the financial and operational benefits of generating and storing energy on-site:

  • £2,600-£3,700 annual energy savings at offices, depots and leisure sites
  • More than £18,000 annual savings at high-demand factory sites
  • Peak electricity demand reduced by 5kW to 150kW, helping sites with limited grid capacity
  • Additional savings possible through dynamic energy tariffs

The research found that combining solar generation, battery storage and bidirectional EV charging allows businesses to shift energy use away from peak periods, improve charging efficiency and maximise renewable energy generation.

Separately, SolarSense said a typical 80-space solar car park could save around £28,000 a year in electricity costs, rising to more than £40,000 where energy generated is fully utilised by adjoining buildings.
