Stellantis eyes £13k electric city cars as Panda and 2CV make UK return more likely

Stellantis has moved a step closer to bringing affordable electric motoring back to the city car market, with new Fiat Panda and Citroën 2CV-inspired EVs expected from 2028 and increasingly likely to be sold in the UK.

The two models will be built in Italy on a new dedicated electric platform designed specifically for small, low-cost EVs. Stellantis is targeting a starting price of around €15,000, equivalent to roughly £13,000.

For drivers, that would put the cars among the cheapest EVs on sale, undercutting models such as the Renault 5, Hyundai Inster and Citroën ë-C3.

While the names draw on two motoring icons, Stellantis says the focus is affordability and practicality rather than nostalgia. Citroën has already confirmed its new 2CV-inspired model will take the original's approach to simplicity, accessibility and everyday usability, while Fiat is expected to channel the spirit of the boxy 1980s Panda.

The plans are also significant for the UK market. Stellantis Europe chief Emanuele Cappellano said he is "95%" certain the new city EVs will be offered in right-hand drive, despite questions around the business case for small electric cars in Britain.

The project highlights a growing push among manufacturers to make EVs accessible to more drivers. After years of larger, more expensive electric models dominating headlines, attention is increasingly turning to smaller, lower-cost cars that could bring electric motoring within reach of a much wider audience.
