Battery-buffered charging offers workaround where grid connections are weak

SP Energy Networks is expanding battery-buffered EV charging across three operational sites following a successful trial.

TUAL’s PowerUp system stores electricity from the available grid connection before delivering higher-power DC charging to vehicles when needed.

That means sites can potentially support useful fleet charging without immediately securing a major grid upgrade.

For fleet managers, this provides another example of why inadequate site power does not always need to stop an otherwise viable electrification project.

Battery-buffered infrastructure could be particularly relevant at leased premises, constrained depots or locations where connection upgrades are slow or expensive.

Managers should still compare total energy cost, charging demand, storage capacity and long-term expansion requirements against a permanent grid upgrade.

But where infrastructure is holding vehicle deployment back, the growing range of alternative charging solutions means fleets have more options than simply waiting.
