New commercial energy hub gives fleets more than one route to decarbonisation

Construction has started on a new Sheffield energy hub designed specifically for vans and HGVs.

Aegis Energy’s site near the M1 will provide 400kW EV charging alongside Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) pumps, an optional green fuel for diesel engines. 72 van bays and 30 truck bays are planned at full build. It is expected to open in spring 2027.

For commercial fleets, the interesting development is the multi-energy model.

Not every van or truck duty cycle can necessarily move to battery-electric at the same time. Infrastructure supporting several lower-carbon options could allow operators to decarbonise suitable routes first while retaining flexibility elsewhere.

Fleet managers planning future energy requirements should therefore avoid assuming their depot or refuelling strategy will move directly from one fuel to another.

Instead, modelling the likely mix of electric and other lower-carbon vehicles over the next five years could lead to better infrastructure decisions today.
