Motorway charging growth increasingly depends on the grid behind it

The Government has published its evaluation of the Rapid Charging Fund pilot, examining how public funding can help overcome electricity-network constraints at motorway service areas.

The pilot was created because the cost of securing additional grid capacity can prevent operators installing the level of ultra-rapid charging future EV demand will require.

For fleets, this matters particularly for high-mileage cars, vans and eventually electric HGVs relying on strategic-road charging.

The lesson is to look beyond headline charger numbers.

Power capacity, future expansion, site reliability and the number of vehicles that can charge simultaneously will increasingly determine whether infrastructure can support commercial operations.
