AA/Toyota Mythbuster Rally proves long-range viability of EVs

The AA and Toyota are taking part in a 1850-mile EV Mythbusters Rally across Britain, including cars, vans and a dedicated truck-and-trailer route.

For fleet managers, the value is not the event itself but the real-world evidence it can generate around range, charging access and long-distance usability.

As EV choice expands, fleets should increasingly test vehicles against genuine operating patterns rather than relying only on brochure figures or historic assumptions about range.

That means assessing motorway efficiency, charging-stop frequency, route resilience and how easily drivers can recover from delays or unavailable chargers.

The same principle applies to vans and heavier vehicles: long-distance electrification becomes more credible when fleets can demonstrate the complete journey, not just the theoretical range.

For businesses reviewing replacement policies, the immediate takeaway is to revisit routes previously considered unsuitable for EVs. Improvements in vehicle range, charging speed and infrastructure may have changed the calculation.
