BYD will bring its ultra-fast 1000kW ‘flash charge’ EV technology to the UK, alongside the upcoming Denza Z9 GT, expected in early 2026.
First seen in China on the BYD Han L saloon and Tang L SUV, this super-fast charging system can deliver up to 249 miles of range in just five minutes – significantly faster than any charger currently in the UK.
Having originally planned 5000 chargers in China, BYD is on track for 15,000; and the UK is next, with the first megawatt chargers due in 2025 at new Denza dealerships.
These chargers use two 500kW cables connected to dual charging ports for max
mum output and will support other EVs too.
Although integration with the UK grid remains unclear, BYD says the system can draw power from on-site battery storage topped up by solar panels.
This tech outpaces the UK’s current fastest 480kW chargers from Helix Renewables, though only fully-electric Denzas will benefit – plug-in hybrids like the D9 MPV and B5 SUV aren’t compatible.
BYD Vice-President, Stella Li, said that, as one of the most important markets, the UK is in the frame to be an early adopter, with BYD already preparing to install the first megawatt chargers in the country.
"We are doing the work now, and then we will start by the end of this year. You will see them in different places," Li said, without indicating the size of the planned network.
BYD's 1000kW devices feature two 500kW cables that combine to give the maximum output when plugged in simultaneously to the Z9's two charging ports.
Li added that unlike the majority of Tesla's Superchargers, the new units won't be limited to Denza models: "The flash charging stations can also work with other cars. The only problem is that the car determines the power. Our cars can take all the power."
