Volvo XC60 and XC90 SUVs given huge EV range boost

Volvo has given the XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrid models a significant battery upgrade, with the XC60 claiming to offer up to 124-miles (WLTP) of electric-only range. Up from 49-miles in its previous iteration.

The extended driving range comes courtesy of a larger 41.2kWh battery pack, up from the previous 19kWh unit, and represents a major step forward for plug-in hybrid vehicles. The XC90 is now capable of up to 99-miles (WLTP) of EV-only range, which also nudges it ahead of the competition.

For comparison, the maximum WLTP-based EV-only range from a BMW X5 is 67-miles, with the Range Rover Sport exceeding that slightly at 74-miles. The Chinese Omoda 9 SHS claims 93-miles (WLTP), meaning the Volvo SUVs have promised class-leading figures.

This upgrade to the Swedish SUVs make an even more attractive option for fleet operators and company-car drivers looking to reduce fuel use and emissions without moving fully to an electric vehicle. For fleets with access to workplace or home charging, this could significantly reduce reliance on petrol.

The updated XC60 and XC90 also receive styling changes influenced by Volvo’s newer electric models. Inside, the Scandinavian flair remains with plenty of leather and premium trim throughout, along with the 11.2-inch infotainment system equipped.

For fleets, the development highlights how manufacturers are responding to changing demand for electrified vehicles. While fully electric cars remain an important part of Volvo’s future, longer-range PHEVs could provide an appealing alternative for drivers who need greater flexibility for longer journeys.

The updated XC60 and XC90 models are expected to arrive in the first half of 2027, with further details on UK specifications, pricing and availability expected in the coming months.
