Megawatt charging is starting to fit around HGV rest periods

Electric truck charging is beginning to align more closely with the working patterns of long-distance drivers.

At IAA Transportation, Daimler Truck, MAN, Scania and charging provider Milence demonstrated Megawatt Charging System technology capable of bringing electric HGV batteries to around 80% or full charge within approximately 30-45 minutes.

That matters because it closely matches the statutory rest periods already built into professional driving schedules.

For fleet operators, the relevant question is therefore shifting from simply asking how long an electric truck takes to recharge to whether charging can happen during downtime that would occur anyway.

If it can, the productivity penalty associated with electrification becomes much smaller.

Infrastructure remains the major challenge. High-powered charging needs suitable grid connections and enough sites positioned along key freight corridors.

Fleet managers considering electric HGVs should increasingly map charging against existing driver-break locations and journey plans.

The strongest future deployments will be those where vehicle range, charger location and statutory downtime work together rather than being planned separately.
