BYD brings Chinese competition to Europe’s electric-truck market

Chinese manufacturer BYD plans to introduce its first heavy-duty truck in Europe next year as competition in the electric commercial-vehicle market accelerates.

The company also intends to establish European truck production and build supporting charging, finance and roadside infrastructure around its commercial-vehicle offering.

For fleet managers, this matters because the forces already reshaping the company-car market could now extend into heavy transport.

Greater competition should increase pressure on manufacturers around purchase price, battery performance, standard specification and aftersales support.

Operators considering future electric trucks should assess more than headline range. European payload, charging compatibility, servicing coverage, finance, residual values and parts availability will all be important.

BYD’s entry also gives fleets another reason to review heavy-EV procurement assumptions regularly rather than relying on a market comparison made 12 or 18 months ago.

The electric-truck market is moving quickly, and broader manufacturer choice should ultimately give fleets more leverage when assessing suitable replacements.
