Nissan X-Trail unveiled as U.S-market Rouge, UK arrival by 2028

Nissan has unveiled its next-generation X-Trail, with the new SUV set to bring a sharper design and retain the e-Power hybrid system found in the current model.

The model was revealed as the US-market Rogue, where it'll begin sales first. UK buyers will have to wait, as the X-Trail is expected to reach UK shores by 2028. However, the Rouge gives fleet buyers a glimpse of what's to come.

The new X-Trail features a more angular design, while retaining it's upright, SUV-esque format of the current model. Nissan is also planning an upgraded version of its ProPilot driver-assistance technology, as it continues to develop AI-based autonomous driving systems.

Climbing inside, the cabin of the X-Trail remains functional while providing some flair and tech. It houses two 14.3-inch infotainment screens paired together and is a step forward from the outgoing model.

Electrification will be a key part of the new X-Trail. The US-market Rogue will gain Nissan’s e-Power hybrid system for the first time, using a 1.5-litre petrol engine as a generator to supply electricity to the battery and electric motors. That powertrain can already be found in the current X-Trail, Qashqai and expected to be adapted in the fourthcoming Nissan Kicks. It is expected to be equipped with UK cars.

The system can power either a single electric motor or, with Nissan’s e-4ORCE system, two motors for all-wheel drive (AWD). The brand says the set-up delivers a smooth, EV-like acceleration without requiring drivers to plug the vehicle in. 

For fleets, the new X-Trail will eventually replace the current model, which is already available with e-Power and the e-4ORCE AWD system. It'll have firm competition compared to equivalent models from Volkswagen, Hyundai or Skoda, and the ever-increasing Chinese competition will likely challenge it within the next two-years.
