Home charging gets easier for drivers without driveways

A key barrier to home EV charging is being reduced, with the Government confirming that cross-pavement charging channels and associated chargepoints in England will no longer require a planning application.

The change is intended to make it easier for households without off-street parking to run a cable safely beneath the pavement rather than relying entirely on public charging. Local highway-authority approval will still be required.

For fleet managers, the benefit could be significant. More employees may become suitable candidates for EVs while gaining access to cheaper domestic electricity.

The immediate action is to identify drivers previously ruled out of home charging because they park on-street, then check whether their local authority supports approved cross-pavement solutions.

Fleets should also avoid assuming the process will be identical everywhere. Council approval remains important, meaning availability may still differ by location.

The change does not solve every charging-access problem, but it removes one administrative barrier and could widen the pool of drivers able to operate an EV economically.
